Legends of Alūksne « Calendar « Latvia Challenge 2027

The hiking routes start at the Alūksne narrow-gauge railway station and lead through a town where history blends with beautiful natural scenery. Along the way, you will discover Alūksne New Castle, the romantic manor park with its historic monuments, Castle Island with the ruins of a Livonian Order castle, and Tempļakalns Park. You will cross the impressive Tempļakalns pedestrian bridge, enjoy views of Lake Alūksne and explore the town’s historic churches and the Ernst Glück Bible Museum. Each route reveals the unique atmosphere of Alūksne, where natural beauty meets centuries-old stories and legends.

Large Loop

The longest and most varied route also takes you beyond the town, along forest trails, past Lake Dūņenieks, the Mežinieki sports trails, the Siseņu Pines memorial site and the shores of Lake Alūksne. Here, the town’s history blends with peaceful nature trails and scenic lake views.

Medium Loop

In addition to the town’s historic landmarks, this route takes you to quieter natural areas, including Lake Dūņenieks and the Mežinieki sports and recreation area. A great choice for combining forest trails with Alūksne’s most notable attractions.

Small Loop

The shortest route focuses on Alūksne’s historic centre, the manor park, Castle Island and Tempļakalns Park. Ideal for those who want to explore the town’s legends, architecture and beautiful lake views at a more relaxed pace.
